The European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS) is pleased to announce the signature of a Joint Statement with the WHO Regional Office for Europe and nine other leading European and international medical organisations, marking the beginning of a new era of structured collaboration between WHO/Europe and the medical profession.

Signed in Copenhagen on 10 June 2026, the statement reflects a shared commitment to strengthen cooperation in addressing some of the most pressing challenges facing healthcare systems across the WHO European Region.

The partnership recognises the essential contribution of medical specialists and their representative organisations in translating clinical expertise into evidence-informed policies and practical solutions. It also acknowledges the importance of sustained dialogue between WHO/Europe and the medical profession to improve health outcomes for patients.

Through this collaboration, the signatories commit to working together on key priorities, including:

  • strengthening the healthcare workforce and improving doctors' wellbeing;
  • tackling noncommunicable diseases and mental health challenges;
  • supporting the responsible implementation of artificial intelligence in healthcare;
  • addressing climate and environmental health issues;
  • reducing health inequalities; and
  • contributing to more resilient and sustainable healthcare systems.

The Joint Statement also sets out the next steps for continued cooperation through structured dialogue, joint initiatives, and broader engagement with medical specialty associations across the WHO European Region.

The UEMS looks forward to working closely with WHO/Europe and its partner organisations to advance excellence in specialist medicine and support better healthcare for patients across Europe.
